Caregivers And Halacha

Manifold halachic issues arise when you have an non-Jewish worker in the house. In most cases, the non-Jewish worker is a caregiver, but there are of course other situations where you might employ a non-Jew.

In this series, we will survey the principal sources, following the order of the Shulchan Aruch. This means first dealing with everyday issues, Shabbat, and Yom Tov (Orach Chayyim). Then we will survey issues related to kashrut, yichud, and mezuza (Yoreh De’ah). Finally, we will meet business and financial matters (Choshen Mishpat).

Today’s issues: Men hearing the singing voice of women and halachot surrounding eating a meal. Next we will focus on Shabbat issues, beginning with candle lighting.

A source sheet is available through the links in both WORD format and pdf. In class we will translate and explain these sources.
