The 5 Pairs of Rabbis (Zugot) in Pirkei Avot

The 5 Pairs of Rabbis (Zugot) in Pirkei Avot

The Zugot (“Pairs”) in Pirkei Avot were five successive pairs of Jewish scholars who served as the spiritual leaders of the Jewish people during the Second Temple period. Each pair consisted of a Nasi (president) and an Av Beit Din (head of court), who transmitted the oral tradition from teacher to student in an unbroken chain dating back to Moses, with each pair known for their distinctive ethical teachings and legal interpretations. In this series with Rabbi David Sedley explore the historical and legendary background of these rabbis, and discuss why Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi chose to include these successive generations and their teachings in his Mishna.

The 5 Pairs of Rabbis (Zugot) in Pirkei Avot: Introduction: Chain of Transmission
Class description

In this introductory class, I discuss the chain of transmission stated in the first chapter and a half of Pirkei Avot. Before we begin speaking about the zugot (pairs) of rabbis, I first want to address the following questions:

1.Why is Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh not mentioned at all in Avot?

2.Why does the mishna stop with “received” after Hillel and Shammai?

3.Why did the era of Zugot end with Hillel and Shammai?

4.Why is Pirkei Avot in Nezikin?

The 5 Pairs of Rabbis (Zugot) in Pirkei Avot: Shimon Hatzadik (Simeon the Righteous)

He was the paradigm of a High Priest and defended Jerusalem and the Temple. So how did his son come to built a replica temple on the Nile Delta, which stood for over two centuries and challenged the Jerusalem Temple for supremacy?

1.Why was Shimon Hatzadik so significant?

3.How did he defend Jerusalem and the Temple?

4.What is the story of his son setting up a rival temple in Egypt?

The 5 Pairs of Rabbis (Zugot) in Pirkei Avot: Antigonus of Socho
Class description

In this class I look at the following issues:

  • Why does Antigonus have a Greek name? Who was he named after? Is it permitted for a Jew to have a non-Jewish name?
  • His statement in Pirkei Avot appears to contradict what we read in last week’s Torah reading. If it was already well known that the Torah was not to be taken literally, why did his students part ways with his theology and become Sadducees and Baitusees?
  • What impact did the Sadducees and Baitusees have on modern Judaism?

Class description

In less than two hours I’ll be giving shiur on WebYeshiva.org about a very turbulent time for the Jewish people — the first half of the first century BCE. During this time there were civil wars, destruction of the walls of Jerusalem, the Romans conquered the Temple, the gradual transition of power from the Hasmonean dynasty to Antipater the Idumean, and much chaos and confusion.
