Maariv Saturday Night

This shiur explores the unique structure and themes of Maariv on Saturday night, as Shabbat transitions into the new week. Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman and examine the special additions that accompany the end of Shabbat, including Vayehi Noam, V’Ata Kadosh, and the Havdalah paragraph in the Amidah. Through close study of the liturgy and its sources, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how Maariv on Motzei Shabbat helps us carry the holiness of Shabbat forward into the weekdays.

Maariv Saturday Night: Maariv Saturday Night
Class description

Dear Everyone

The Evening Prayer that we say on Saturday nights does not differ essentially from the other weekday Evening Prayers.

However, after the Amidah prayer various prayers are added to the Saturday evening service. Why are these prayers added? Many explanations have been offered for these additions. Perhaps the most striking explanation is that we extend the prayers so that the souls of those condemned to Hell can remain a bit longer at rest.

We will talk  about these Saturday evening prayers today.

Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman graduated from Yeshiva University in 1980 and the dental school of Columbia University in 1985. In 1989 he began studying and teaching at Yeshivat Hamivtar and now studies and teaches at Yeshivat Machanaim in Efrat. He has rabbinic ordination from Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg.
