King David's Diaries

After seeing the mistakes Shaul made as king we can now have a better understanding of what Hashem is looking for in the next one. In tonight’s shiur we will see the choosing of Dovid and what Hashem highlights about him in the pshat. We will then get to see Shaul meet him for the first time and how their relationship begins to develop.

As Dovid becomes more beloved by everyone he meets, Shaul feels more and more threatened. He will start looking for more and more creative ways to get Dovid killed, hoping that if he “takes out” the competition maybe he can keep the throne.

As Shaul’s fear of Dovid grows, his desire to kill him intensifies. In tonight’s shiur we watch how the people who love Dovid will take extreme measures to protect him even if it means manipulating or lying to their own father.

After Shaul tries to ambush Dovid outside his home and Dovid is able to escape, Dovid still has doubts if he is guilty of any crimes. He runs to Yonatan and together they came up with a plan. In tonight’s shiur we will see the actualization of that plan and what Dovid will have to do when he learns how Shaul truly feels about him.

Shaul concerns and fears are now overtaking him and he can no longer hold them in. He is taking more of a stance with his servants of “if you’re not with me, you’re against me” which motivates Doeg to tell Shaul where he last saw Dovid. Tonight we will see the ramifications of that incident and how far Shaul is willing to go to kill Dovid.

After Dovid is able to escape from Shaul yet again he hides in the caves on Ein Gedi. Shaul will continue to chase him for the next many months. Tonight we will watch their encounter in Ein Gedi, and get to meet Avigayil, who will become the second of Dovid’s wives.

Now that Dovid is living with the Plishtim, Shaul is no longer willing to chase after him. But a major war is brewing from the Plishtim against the Jews. The last few prakim of Shmuel alef will “ping pong” the perspectives and situations of Dovid and Shaul and how the war will change both of their lives.

Now that Shaul is dead can Dovid take the throne? Will people support him or did Shaul turn too many people against him believing Dovd was a rebel? And if they won’t accept Dovid, who will be the leader of this shattered nation? We will get to see how all the challenges unflod in tonight’s shiur.

Since we didn’t get far in last weeks shiur, this week we are picking up where we left off of Avner joining Dovids side and heading out of palace with the claim that he will be able to bring the entire nation to Dovid!

As we learned last week, Dovid finally becomes king over the entire nation. What will his kingdom look like? In tonight’s class we will see how he tries to balance politics, wars and making sure Gd is the centerfold of it all!
