How to Say Shema

How to Say Shema

Everyone knows that Shema Yisrael is one of the most important fixtures of our daily prayer. Are we supposed to say it standing up or sitting down? Should we cover our eyes when reciting it? How much kavanah must we have? Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman as he explores the halachot regarding surrounding the recitation of the Shema.

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to our two classes on “How to Say Shema.”

The Nike™ company came up with a slogan “Just Do it” and its simplicity is quite attractive. Sometimes we can get caught up with plans and ideas and all of this thinking about something prevents us from actually doing anything.

“Just Do It” is a very good way of approaching many of our obligations and duties but it is totally inappropriate when we approach the mitzva of saying “Shema.” We don’t “just say it.”

In these two classes we will talk about how the Shema needs to be said.

I look forward to studying this subject with you.

Hello Everyone,

The text of the “Shema” is taken from three places in the Torah. But there is a sentence of a single line inserted into the Shema. The line is  ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד.

Why is this line there? What does it mean?

We will learn about this line today.

Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman graduated from Yeshiva University in 1980 and the dental school of Columbia University in 1985. In 1989 he began studying and teaching at Yeshivat Hamivtar and now studies and teaches at Yeshivat Machanaim in Efrat. He has rabbinic ordination from Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg.
