Our first unit deals with the definition of sexual intercourse.

This definition applies equally to the prohibition of nidda and all other prohibited intercourse (incest, adultery, rape, etc.).

Next week, our second unit will begin to focus on the definition of nidda and closely related prohibitions depending on uterine bleeding (zava and yoledet).

Today we focus on the definitions of the four categories of nidda:

Nidda proper

Zava Ketanna זבה קטנה

Zava Gedola זבה גדולה

Yoledet יולדת

Nidda of Torah status requires hargasha, a feeling of blood leaving the uterus.

Without hargasha, the status of nidda is de-rabbanan.

Prisha (פרישה), the obligation of husband and wife to separate at the time of the month when the onset of bleeding is expected.

After the rules of פרישה, we will focus on the woman’s obligation to check herself for bleeding.
