Chalav Yisrael
What is the controversy over supervision of milk all about? Who are the strict and who are the lenient poskim? Join Rabbi Dovid Fink as he examines what their disagreement is all about. Should a Jew make chalav Yisrael a priority or not?
Chalav Yisrael: Chalav Yisrael
According to the Shulchan Aruch and all the traditional sources, milking of cows, goats, and sheep must be supervised by a Torah-observant Jewish person.
Supervised milk is called “halav Yisrael,” the milk of Jews.
Unsupervised milk is called “halav Akum,” the milk of the non-Jews. According to the Shulchan Aruch, and all the traditional sources it is prohibited.
In this miniseries, we will survey the opinions of the leading poskim who nowadays permit unsupervised milk and those who still require supervision.
