The Demise of the Sanhedrin

The Sanhedrin was the legislative body that gave us Rabbinic law. Shortly after the destruction of the Second Temple, the Sanhedrin was dissolved and to this day has not been reconstituted.

Without a Sanhedrin, do rabbis today have any power to legislate new halachot? Can they alter or repeal existing halachot?

In this series we will examine opinions of the greatest medieval and modern rabbis in defining their authority in determining halachic matters.

Hebrew sources are available through the links in both WORD format and pdf. In class we will translate and explain these texts.
