Hello Everyone,
In today’s class we will talk about more cases of stipulations in marriage proposals. If a man proposes marriage to woman saying that he will give her a silver coin, but really gives her a coin of gold, is the proposal valid? Rabbi Shimon says that the proposal is valid, because gold is obviously more valuable than silver. Therefore the woman is satisfied (or perhaps thrilled) to receive the coin of gold. Surprisingly, the Sages (Rabbi Shimon’s contemporaries) say that no, the marriage proposal is not valid because the man deviated from the stated proposal.
The Gemara goes on to discuss when do we say that stipulations must be taken literally and when we do not.
