Topics in Masechet Beitza

THIS IS A WEBYESHIVA.ORG HALACHA MASTERY PROGRAM COURSE BUT DOES NOT REQUIRE ACCEPTANCE TO THE HALACHA MASTERY PROGRAM. It is free for members of the Halacha Mastery Program or costs $25 for non-Halacha Mastery students.
In this course with Rabbi David Brofsky, we will explore the most fundamental, and practical laws of holiday topics as they appear in Masechet Beitza. We will begin by analyzing the differences between Shabbat and Yom Tov, and then discuss the principle of “Ochel Nefesh” and its practical applications, including cooking, carrying, and even bathing on Yom Tov. We will also discuss other Yom Tov issues including Eiruv Tavshilin, Kibuy (extinguishing a fire) and Yom Tov Sheni.

On Wednesday we will finish the packet I gave out two weeks ago, and focus on the melachot of havara and kibuy, with some interesting (and surprising!) applications. As this week Shavuot falls out on Motzei Shabbat, I would like to dedicate part of the shiur to halachic issues which may arise, including hachana, seuda shlishit, how to make kiddush, etc. I am looking forward. If you would like me to address any specific topics relevant to this Yom Tov (after Shabbat)- please let me know.
