Hello Everyone,
One of the most significant moments in the Yom Kippur service is the opening passage “Kol Nidrei.” I deliberately used the word “passage” as opposed to “prayer” because Kol Nidrei is not really a prayer. Prayers are requests that we make to Hashem but in Kol Nidrei it does not seem that we are asking for anything.
Nevertheless Kol Nidrei has acquired a remarkable status. It is a remarkable fact that in the very fist movie ever made with a soundtrack ,The Jazz Singer, the climax of the movie is the moment when the hero leads his father’s synagogue in chanting Kol Nidrei.
So today we will open with a discussion of the Kol Nidrei.
