Rabbis have been arguing about the traditional Rosh Hashanah greeting (לשנה טובה תכתבו) for centuries. In this series with Rabbi Dovid Fink survey the opinion of the leading poskim and focus on what they teach us about the fundamental nature of the Jewish New Year.

The Shulchan Aruch calls for us to greet each other on Rosh ha-Shana with a specific formula: תִּכָּתֵב בְּשָׁנָה טוֹבָה
We will survey the opinions of other principal medieval and modern authorities defining how and why specific greetings are called for on Rosh ha-Shana.
Not surprisingly, the various opinions of the posekim regarding the correct greeting are rooted in their understanding of the spiritual nature of Rosh ha-Shana.
