Biblical Figures: The Midrashic View

Surprises and challenges await those who seek out the Biblical figures in the
Midrash. In this course with Rabbanit Yafit Clymer we will explore the ingenious ways in which the Rabbis of the Midrash found answers to important questions about personalities in Torah. In doing so we will understand how these great sages built a religious and educational system of understanding to be used by all generations to come.

In today’s class will discuss general ideas about the genre of Midrash in Jewish literature and set the time and place parameters.

We will dive into our first Biblical Figure – Enoch of the Beginning of Genesis and the different ancient Jewish exegeses and Midrashic explanation of his story.

Rabbanit Yafit Clymer is a senior lecturer in Jewish Studies at the several Matan learning centers, at 'Emunah' and 'WebYeshiva'. She is a group instructor for various programs. Rabbanit Clymer is part of the steering committee of the 'Beit Hillel' organization and answers halachic questions online as a part of their Meshivat Nefesh project.
