A well-known rabbinic adage teaches that the Second Temple was destroyed due to sinat hinam, often translated as “baseless hatred.” A common cliché adds that if this is so, the remedy must be ahavat hinam – baseless love. Join tour guide Rabbi Alan Haber for an online journey descending beneath the streets of the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City to try and decipher what this actually means. Through a careful analysis of the remains in the excavations known as the Herodian Quarter and the Broad Wall, together with several pertinent rabbinic and historical texts, we will gain perspective and derive some important and relevant contemporary lessons.
