Picking out ארבעה מינים really means determining if the ארבעה מינים being offered to you are kosher. Determining the the kashrut of ארבעה מינים requires both knowledge both of what is written in the books of Halacha as well as visual knowledge; the knowledge to discern if what one sees is what is described in the texts.
