Eating on Yom Kippur in Cases of Danger

If fasting threatens someone’s life on Yom Kippur, he or she is of course permitted to eat and drink.

How can we establish whether someone’s life is in fact in danger?

And having established that the treat to life is real, are there any limitations in eating and drinking?

Not surprisingly, leading rabbis are divided on these issues. In class we will survey their opinions and the reasoning.

A source sheet is available through the links in both WORD format and pdf. In class we will translate and explain these sources.
