Chalav Yisrael

According to the Shulchan Aruch and all the traditional sources, milking of cows, goats, and sheep must be supervised by a Torah-observant Jewish person.

Supervised milk is called “halav Yisrael,” the milk of Jews.

Unsupervised milk is called “halav Akum,” the milk of the non-Jews. According to the Shulchan Aruch, and all the traditional sources it is prohibited.

In this miniseries, we will survey the opinions of the leading poskim who nowadays permit unsupervised milk and those who still require supervision.

A source sheets is available through the links in both WORD format and pdf. In class we will translate and explain these sources.
