Many people, especially people who grow up in Israel, do not realize that one of the 39 types of “work” which is forbidden on Shabbat is “carrying.” This מלאכה is obviated by the construction of an “eruv.” When a person travels , whether to a city a city outside of Israel, she or he must find out if there is an eruv where they are planning to spend Shabbat (or Yom Kipur) and what are the boundaries of the eruv.
If there is no eruv, then the traveler must acquaint himself or herself with the Halachot of “carrying.”
Today we will review these Halachot.
