Two Sets of Luchot

Two Sets of Luchot

When B’nei Yisrael left Mount Sinai, they left with two sets of Luchot, tablets. One was the original, written with the “hand” of God which Moshe threw and was now in pieces. The second Moshe crafted himself and brought back down the mountain after the people were forgiven. Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman as learns through the story in an effort to understand how else they were different and how they were the same.

Two Sets of Luchot: Two Types of Luchot
Class description

Hello Everyone

On Shavuot we celebrate receiving the Torah. Part of the story of receiving the Torah is the smashing by Moshe Rabbeinu of the first set of stone tablets and his receiving a second set of stone tablets.

The question is asked by two of our greatest commentators, was the text engraved in the second set of tablets identical to the text engraved in the first set?

We will see the opinions of the Ibn Ezra and Ramban who debate this point.

I hope that you will find today’s session enlightening and enjoyable.

Hello Everyone,
Today is the second and final session on the לוחות הברית. The Sages as well as the great commentators to the תנ”ך disagree about what happened to the shattered pieces of the first set of Tablets. Some say that they were stored along with the second set in the ארון הבריתmade by בצלאל. Others say that they were stored in a container made by Moshe Rabbeinu.
This disagreement leads to other questions which we will discuss today.

Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman graduated from Yeshiva University in 1980 and the dental school of Columbia University in 1985. In 1989 he began studying and teaching at Yeshivat Hamivtar and now studies and teaches at Yeshivat Machanaim in Efrat. He has rabbinic ordination from Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg.
