Tisha B’Av 5777 (2017)
Monday, July 31 and Tuesday, August 1
This year we will have three live, online, recorded sessions. Scroll down to view the times in your time zone.
Join us and Jews from all around the world to make your Tisha B’Av more meaningful.
Feel free to follow the live updates on Facebook and Twitter and to join the classroom at any point throughout the day. As we mourn the divide of the Jewish people, please help us come together as one to learn and grow together.
~~~First Session: Eicha on Tisha B’Av Eve
with Rabbi Chaim Brovender
What is Eicha all about? We’ll look at the first and fifth chapters of the book of Eicha with Rashi’s commentary to see what greater themes and lessons we can take from the account of the destruction.
~~~
Second Session: Explanatory Kinot Service
with Rabbi Chaim Brovender and Rabbi Yehoshua Geller
Join Rabbi Brovender as he explains the underlying themes of various Kinot to make them more meaningful. He will give historical background about the Kinot and their authors along with a deep examination of the text and ideas. Rabbi Brovender will show how the themes of the Kinot can resonate with us in modern times.
Many of the Kinot said on Tisha B’Av are difficult to relate to without understanding their meaning or background. Rabbi Geller will read through some of the Kinot to give us some context and help us better understand and internalize their messages.
Rabbi Geller will continue with a discussion of the Book of Eicha. Eicha tells the tragic story of the destruction of the First Temple. Eicha is not only a story of pain and suffering, but it also grants us insight into how we can take that pain and sadness and use it to grow and better ourselves and our relationships with God.
Rabbi Brovender’s lecture is dedicated in memory of Mr. Norman Ruback z”l נחמן בן גדליה הכהן ז”ל.
Third Session: Esther vs Eicha
with Rabbi Avi Weinstein
Rabbi Weinstein will look at the introductions to the midrashim on Migillat Esther and Megillat Eicha, Esther Rabba and Eicha Rabba to follow different themes. What can we learn from these midrashim? How can we relate them to our lives today?

He was the founding Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Hamivtar and Michlelet Bruria (today, Midreshet Lindenbaum) where he pioneered the teaching of Gemara to students for whom the Talmud had been a closed book. For over forty years he has been a leading force in teaching Torah in Israel and enabling his students to "learn how to learn" according to the renowned "Brovender Method."
