Shavuot During the Beit Hamikdash
The first Shavuot, the revelation at Sinai, was a lot different than what Shavuot was like during the time of the Beit Hamikdash. Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman as he explores what it was like to celebrate this festival, also known as Chag Hakatzir or Yom Habikurim, in the land during Temple times.
Shavuot During the Beit Hamikdash: Shavuot During the Beit Hamikdash
Hello Everyone
During the time of Beit haMikdash two mitzvot were associated with Shavuot. One mitzvah was the bringing of two loaves of bread from the new wheat harvest. These two loaves of bread, the שתי הלחם were the first offering from the new harvest.
The second mitzvah associated with Shavuot was the mitzvah of ביכורים. Shavuot marked the opening of the harvest season when the first fruits were brought to Beit haMikdash by the farmers.
In today’s session we will discuss the שתי הלחם.
Shavuot During the Beit Hamikdash: Shavuot During the Beit Hamikdash
Hello Everyone,
Shavuot is celebrated as זמן מתן תורתינו, the time that our Torah was given. It is intriguing that first of all, the Torah does not state clearly on what date the Torah was given, Second of all, Shavuot is cited in the Torah as being the holiday on which the first fruits are offered in the Temple.
Last week we talked about one of these offerings; the two loaves of bread made from the new wheat harvest. Today we will speak about the mitzvah to bring the first fruits of the seven species for which the Land of Israel is praised. This offering is known as ביכורים.
I hope that the shiur will be enjoyed by all.
