Haman's Plan Against The Jews

Haman's Plan Against The Jews

You could also call this “The Secret (Unreported) Conversations of Haman According to the Aggadah.” In either case, Join Rabbi Yitzhak Zuriel and explore how the aggadah in the gemara understands the way Haman convinced King Achashverush to go along with his scheme. We may even dive into the conversation between Haman and Mordechai and its underlying meanings.

Haman's Plan Against The Jews: Hatching the Scheme Against the Jews
Class description

In this 3-part series, we will study in depth a few key passages of Megilat Esther together with the aggadah–the midrashic (non-halachic) material — of the Amoraim, which is found within the gemara of Masechet Megilah.

In this session, we will study the section of the aggadah in the gemara where it explains how Haman arrived at his scheme against the Jews of the Persian kingdom. Then we will begin studying the section on how he convinced the king to go along with this scheme.

The verses in the Megila that are relevant to this part of the aggadah are: chapter 3, verses 1-11.  You are welcome to look them over before the class.

Haman's Plan Against The Jews: How Haman Convinced the King to Support the Plan
Class description

PLEASE NOTE: Since the U.S. has already begun Daylight Savings Time while Israel will not yet do so until the end of March, there is a 6-hour (and not the usual 7-hour) time  difference between Eastern Daylight Time and Israel Time, until March 29.  Hence this session, and the following session in this series, will begin at 3 PM Eastern Daylight Time and not at 2 PM.

In this second part of this 3-part series, we will study the next part of the aggadah in the gemara, which begins on Megilah Daf 13b and continues onto Daf 14a.  In this section, the aggadah tries to understand what were the motivations of both Haman and Ahashverosh from the few words of dialogue reported in the verses of the megila, What were Ahashverosh’s hesitations and concerns? How did Haman assuage them? And in the end how much did Ahashverosh actually identify with Haman’s goals?

Haman's Plan Against The Jews: The King’s True Intentions; Esther’s Plan Against Haman
Class description

In this session, the third and last of this 3-part series, we will complete the aggadah about Haman’s discussion with the King and see another depiction by the amoraim of the King’s intentions towards the Jews.

Then we will move to a later segment of the aggadah, found on Megilah 15b, which quotes a tannaitic source with a plethora of different explanations of what Esther was intending by inviting Haman to the banquet with the King. Some of the answers given are truly surprising!
