Examining the Shabbos App

Examining the Shabbos App

We will study the approaches of the leading poskim to the underlying technical issues. These approaches apply to Smart Phones and a host of other modern devices. We will study the original Hebrew texts of the great rabbis, translate them into English and analyse them.

Examining the Shabbos App: Lesson 1
Class description

The publicity surrounding the Shabbos App raises a number of important halachic issues. Our first topic of analysis is “Grama,” indirectly causing work to be done on Shabbat. The claim that the Shabbos App indirecty causes writing to appear on the screen and be transmitted as a message is fundamental. In our first session, we will examine the views of the great poskim defining what is and what is not considered “indirect action.” Sources (in Hebrew) are available through the link. In class we will translate and analyze these sources.
